Norman's Attic : Volume Two

This week in the time-machine, disaster results in new approaches to time-travelling! The window at the top of the time-machine was left wide open on a sunny day, which became a rainy night, during which time Ergo & The Mongoose used conventional transport to travel a mere 100 miles away (with a few detours). Returning to the time-machine, they found a thoroughly washed mixer, and many drenched records. Fortunately amplifier, turntables, and recording facilities were left unwashed.





Phew! The mixer now sits by a radiator, soaking up the heat and hopefully soaking out the soak.





But there was a podcast to make! What resulted was attaching two Vestax turntables to the left and right inputs of the amplifier, placing the Dansette monarch next to them, and then miking up the three speakers.





By the time this has been figured out, it was very late in the day. Maybe that is why what has resulted is a very quiet, slow and spacey mix. Which the time-travellers are pretty happy with.





Using the next batch of records found in Norman's Attic, no pre-monitoring, and no effects, we hear Don Williams (incidentally also the name of Ergo's grandfather) singing with the Geoff Love Choir, multiple versions of Concerto de Aranjuez bouncing off each other, a Camel carrying a Snow Goose, a bizarre man at the piano with an eyeless woman, and a very warped Dvorak New World Symphony.





The main visual anomaly of the set, though, was definitely this disturbing shot of Nicholas Nicholas playing piano, accompanied by the woman with no eyeballs ....

Sweaty Satch and String Vest

This week in the time-machine, further shenanigens with broken CDrs and lock-grooves (see last week's blog-entry for Blue Peter style demonstration. Swathes of classical guitar clashing with jazz, acid, and Erik Satie. Along the way we picked up Spike Jones and his City Slickers, then dropped them off the 16th century to alter the course of musical history. Lockgroovetastic!

A fairly minimal blog this week, because en-route to the Battle of Hastings in the time-machine we realised we'd forgotten the camera. Instead, feast your eyes on this blue tuba!

And a man in a string vest ...

We tried to find a picture of a vest in a string-man, but no luck ....

Things to make and do .....

This week we went all handicraft in the time-machine, travelling through the ages armed with scissors and blu-tack, making origami animals as we mixed a lockgroovetastic lovefest of jazz, bossa-nova, and spacetime samba.

Four turntables, four broken CDrs, eight pieces of blu-tack, one-delay button, one very late night, one intense time-travelling experience.

Bowlly, Boulez, and baldness

This week the time-machine ventures back and forth through simultaneous reggae crossed with Pinocchio, a highly bald Pierre Boulez conducting a Petrushka'd Stravinsky, whilst Harry Belafonte in his days of deformed hand shouts Day-Oh!

This was the second mix of the evening, and the wine was flowing like a river. We were attacked by Daleks wielding electro, and fought back with the delay button.

Watched over by the bespectacled white elephant, we mixed like steaming casseroles and buttered muffins.

Get Fighting Fit ......

This week in the time machine, we travel through swathes of acid and homoerotic paratroopers. Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa make a welcome return hitting the skins (of the paratroopers). A hundred drumkits falling down the stairs with a dog named Rover accompanied by the Mike Sammes singers (again). A piano being dropped from a great height. And all at the Cabaret! What a night it was .....

Mix created on three portable turntables and a Dansette Monarch. Delay button sprinkled liberally again.

Under Red Skies

This week the time-machine travelled beneath skies to delight Shepherds the world over, through time and space to bring you a slapdash mix from a haberdashery of Parisian jazz clashing then eventually chatting with Erik Satie, when they realise they're not so different as they first presumed. Fellow time-traveller Dr Who pops in for a quick beer or wine of his preference, and brings along a collection of mechanical-music from the past 500 years or so. Across time in Russia, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky converse delightfully, and raindrops keep falling on my head when I dance in Hungary. Throw in liberal chunks of Puccini and Harpo Marx, cook for thirty minutes on a medium heat.

Set up the same as last week. Four turntables, no pre-monitoring, lots of junk-shop and found records. A mixer with a delay button. A dansette that has a tendency to get stuck on a groove at any given time.

The Time Machine opens its doors!

Welcome to the Time Machine! A chaotic mix of junkshop goodness this week, with recurring interjections from Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich slapping the skins like hot tuna on a wet bottom. A man with a very tedious voice talks about the Companies Act, while sipping a Tequila Sunrise, a barrel-organist enters the room, orders some hot bratwurst sausages, which are abruptly stolen by Tubby the Tuba, who is murdered by the drummer. And then a short delay. And some cheap jazz for those Saturday evenings when you have no alcohol and your dog has died.



Mix created live on four portable and vintage turntables, no headphones, you don't know what you're going to get when the needle hits the record. Able assistance provided by the delay button on the mixer. Copious amounts of chance, chants, red wine, and Belgian beer.
